Choosing a Trail Ride

From the saddle, Pokolbin looks different: bushland, farmland and rows of vines, with the Broken Back Range across the valley. Hunter Valley Horses runs guided trail rides from stables on the Hunter Valley Resort grounds at 917 Hermitage Road, and the rides are pitched at complete beginners as well as confident riders.

Trail rides start from $129 per person, with a minimum age of 10. Helmets meeting the Australian Standard come with the horse and saddlery; riders should wear long pants and closed shoes.

Hens and birthday parties: each session takes up to 15 riders, so a group can book a private ride and have the guide to themselves.
Team outings: a private sunrise or sunset ride gives a work group a shared outing that needs no riding experience.
Anniversaries and proposals: the couples' vineyard ride with a picnic for two is the quieter option.
Families: the same business runs a farm where children can feed sheep, goats, alpacas and other animals.
