About Hunter Valley Horses

Hunter Valley Horses is run by Scott Googe, who grew up working on a Queensland cattle station and set up the business around two decades ago after buying into local carriage tour companies. The stables sit on the grounds of the Hunter Valley Resort at 917 Hermitage Road in Pokolbin; the stables share the property with the Adventure Centre, which is signposted from the resort entrance. Trail rides wind through bushland, farmland and vineyards, with views across to the Broken Back Range and plenty of wildlife along the way. Rides suit complete beginners as well as confident riders, and the minimum age on the trail rides is 10. Choose a one-hour bushland ride, a 75-minute sunrise ride or a 90-minute sunset ride. Each session takes up to 15 riders, so a hens group, birthday party or team can book a private version and have the guide to themselves. Couples can also book a private vineyard ride that stops at a picnic set up for two. Helmets meeting the Australian Standard are supplied along with the horse and saddlery, and riders should wear long pants and closed shoes. Rides go ahead in light to medium rain; if the team cancels for weather, you can reschedule or take a refund. The same business also runs horse-drawn carriage tours through wine country, a restored wedding carriage, and a farm where children can feed sheep, goats, alpacas and other animals. Bookings are essential, seven days a week.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can ride together?

Each riding session takes up to 15 riders. If you'd rather not share the trail, book a private ride so the session is just your group and the guide.

How much is a trail ride?

The one-hour bushland ride is $129, the 75-minute sunrise ride $169 and the 90-minute sunset ride $179. Private versions are listed at $159, $199 and $209.

Is there a minimum age?

Trail rides are for riders aged 10 and over. A 30-minute family ride takes children from six, and a 10-minute led ride suits little ones aged two to seven.

What should we wear and what is supplied?

Wear long pants and enclosed shoes. An Australian Standard helmet, the horse and all the saddlery are provided. Phones are fine, but keep both hands on the reins.

What happens if it rains?

Rides still go out in light to medium rain, but the team may cancel in bad weather. If they do, you can move to another time or get a refund.
