About Inner City Winemakers
Inner City Winemakers makes wine in the middle of the city, at a working winery and cellar door on Church Street in Wickham, within walking distance of the city centre and the harbour. Grapes are trucked in from New South Wales growing regions such as New England, Mudgee, Orange and the Hilltops, then crushed, fermented, blended and bottled on site. Head winemaker Rob Wilce has more than 30 years in the industry, and the whole team has a hand in the wines, down to the label designs. The tasting is a seated, hosted experience served by the winemaking team. It works through the full range in order, starting with traditionally fermented sparkling wines, then the whites, the reds and finally the aged fortifieds, with plenty of time for questions about how each one is made. A cheese platter to share comes with the tasting if you mention it in the booking notes. Bookings are capped at eight people, which suits a birthday catch-up, a small hens group, an anniversary or a few friends visiting the city. The walls double as a gallery for local Newcastle artists. Tastings cost $15 a person and run from Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, with Sunday tastings by arrangement. Book online, or call the cellar door for a last-minute visit. Bottles can be bought to take home after the tasting, and there is a wine club for regular deliveries. Alcohol is only served to guests aged 18 and over.
