About The Yellow Door Kitchen
The Yellow Door Kitchen is a dedicated cooking school in Tighes Hill, set up inside a former printing warehouse on Bryant Street. Owner Janet Newton trained as a pastry chef at Le Cordon Bleu and worked in restaurants and patisseries before opening the school, and she teaches alongside guest chefs. Classes are small, with around 10 to 15 places, and run as either hands-on sessions or demonstrations you can watch with a glass of wine. The calendar covers a wide spread: fresh pasta with seasonal sauces, bread and pastry, brioche, French macarons, a beer and burgers masterclass, cheese making with ricotta and mozzarella, a Thai banquet, Spanish and southern Italian menus, and Christmas baking. Several classes are gluten free. For private groups, any class on the website can be adapted into a team-building or celebration format, and the kitchen caters for dietary requirements. After cooking, the group moves to a private dining room with a long communal table that seats up to 20 and shares the meal. The school also makes dessert platters and finger-food sweets for parties of 10 to 100. Adult classes are for ages 16 and over, and children 12 and up can join an adult class with a grown-up; separate junior classes run for ages seven to 15. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes, as you'll be standing for most of the class. Anyone with a severe allergy to nuts, gluten, dairy, egg, sesame or soy can't attend, because those ingredients are used every day. Classes are paid in full when booking, and parking is available on Bryant and Union Streets.
