About Newcastle Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club
The Newcastle Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club traces its roots to 1947, when it started as the Shortland Gun Club, and has been at its present bushland range at 468 Wilton Road, Awaba, since the early 1990s. The grounds have grown into a large shooting complex with five down-the-line layouts, three skeet layouts, three Olympic trench and four universal trench layouts, two five-stand layouts and a field course. The range has hosted state and national competitions and is used as a training ground by representative shooters. Alongside its member competitions, the club runs events for people who have never fired a shotgun. Try-out bookings pair one to three guests with an experienced clay target shooter for a 30-minute introduction to trap shooting, covering safe firearm handling and how to aim and track a target. For bigger groups, the club hosts corporate shooting events for four to 50 guests, which suit team-building days, client outings and recognition events. Firearms safety courses can also be booked. The clubhouse has a canteen and a bar, there is a covered and fenced children's playground, and the grounds include powered and unpowered camping sites with amenities. Bookings for try-outs, corporate events and courses are made by email or through the club's contact form, and requests depend on range availability. The office is staffed on Wednesday afternoons from 1pm to 5pm, and regular practice runs on Wednesday afternoons and the first and third Saturday of each month.
