About Melbourne Studio of Art

The Melbourne Studio of Art is a working art school in Elsternwick that runs term courses, workshops and figure drawing intensives, and also opens its studio to private groups. Founded in 1998 by artist and educator Dena Lester, it grounds its teaching in observational drawing and painting, and that background shapes its group sessions too: a member of the teaching team leads your group, with easels, materials and step-by-step guidance supplied. For adults, private sessions cover several formats – life drawing, painting, drawing, clay sculpture or a collaborative piece the whole group works on together. They suit birthdays and other celebrations, workplace teams looking for a team-building activity and friends who simply want to unwind together, and no previous art experience is needed, as the project is designed for mixed skill levels. Sessions are held in-house at the Glen Huntly Road studio, and the studio can also bring the experience to your own venue. Pricing for in-house sessions starts from $650 per group, with a final quote based on group size and the format chosen. The studio also runs family sessions where parents, children and grandparents create side by side, and children's art birthday parties where every guest finishes an artwork based on the birthday child's interests. Classes for children and teens run during the school term alongside adult courses in oil painting, watercolour and the human figure. Staff are first-aid trained, and the studio describes itself as welcoming to people of all abilities. The studio sits at 554–556 Glen Huntly Road, with its entrance on Hoddle Street.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private group session cost?

Adult group sessions held at the studio start from $650 per group. The final quote depends on how many people are coming and which format you choose, such as life drawing, painting or clay.

Do we need any art experience?

No. Private sessions are designed for all skill levels, and one of the studio's artists guides the group step by step, so beginners and confident artists can work side by side.

What can our group do besides life drawing?

Adult groups can choose painting, drawing, life drawing, clay sculpture or a collaborative project that everyone contributes to. The format is agreed when the studio prepares your quote.

Can the studio come to our venue instead?

Yes. Sessions can be hosted in the Elsternwick studio or brought to your own venue, which is handy for workplace teams. Contact the studio for a quote either way.

Does the studio host children's art parties too?

Yes. Kids' birthday parties start from $600 per group, with each child making a finished artwork through an artist-guided project tailored to the birthday child's interests.
