Choosing a Tasting Experience

Whisky is what's poured on a tasting in Port Melbourne, and it's poured where it's made. Starward Distillery & Bar works out of a big warehouse at 50 Bertie St, and from the bar you can watch the stills running.

Groups can choose a short tour or settle in for a long barrel session. Tasting formats on offer at Bertie St:

  • A 45-minute distillery tour, wrapped up with three whiskies in the glass.
  • A long barrel session, the Whisky Masterclass and Barrel Tasting, which takes the group into the barrel hall to try seven whiskies, some poured from the cask.
  • An afternoon that opens with lunch at a Port Melbourne brewery close by, then heads to Starward for a tour and tasting.
  • Private tours and tastings set up for bigger parties.
  • Experiences priced from $49 per person.

It's an adults-only outing, with every visitor 18 or over.

Inside Starward's warehouse distillery

  • Starward ages its spirit in casks that once held red wine from nearby wineries.
  • The distillery puts part of the character down to Melbourne's changeable weather, which it says hurries the spirit's pull of flavour out of the wood.
  • The tour walks through the making of the whisky before anything is poured.
  • The masterclass heads deeper into the barrel hall for samples straight from the cask.

Booking a whisky tasting for a party or team

  • Part of the venue can be set aside for a birthday, engagement or anniversary.
  • Work functions are held in the function rooms, with food and cocktails built into the packages.
  • A large event can take the whole warehouse on exclusive hire.
  • Trading days are Thursday to Sunday, so line the tasting up with those.

Common Questions About Tasting Experiences

What happens on the standard Starward tour?

Forty-five minutes on the making of the whisky, closing with three whiskies to taste.

Is there a longer tasting for keen whisky drinkers?

Yes – the masterclass is a two-and-a-half-hour session in the barrel hall, working through seven whiskies including samples from the cask.

Can a distillery visit be paired with a brewery?

Yes. The combined afternoon begins with a meal at a nearby Port Melbourne brewery and finishes at Starward with a tour and tasting.

Can younger guests join a Starward tasting?

No – the venue serves alcohol, so everyone has to be over 18.
