About Matakata Hire & Events
Matakata Hire & Events is a Central Coast tent hire company working from Somersby. The founders fell for Kata tipis at their own English wedding, then brought the idea to Australia. They hire two signature structures: Kata tipis, handmade in Sweden from sustainably grown timber poles and waterproof, fire-retardant canvas, and Sperry tents, the sailcloth marquees with timber poles and a sweeping peaked roof. A single tipi seats about 80 guests or holds 100 standing, and two or three can be joined for 160 to 240 seated. The tipi sides lift for summer shade, and a smokeless fire keeps the space warm in winter. Sperry sizes run from a 5m round for a bar or catering area and a 10m round for 70 seated, up to 10m by 22m and 14m by 26m oyster tents for 150 to 200 at tables, with clear perspex walls that roll down when the weather turns. Packages bundle the tent with flooring, tables and seating, a dance floor and lighting. Beyond the tents there is a hire catalogue of seating, tables, lounge furnishings, lighting, bars and stools, props and decor, plus styling packages for ceremonies, long-table feasts and chill-out lounges. The team visits larger sites free of charge, can supply a generator where there is no power, sets up the day before and packs down the day after. A 25 per cent deposit secures the date, with the balance due two weeks out.

Frequently asked questions
How many guests fit in a tipi?
A single Kata tipi seats around 80 or holds 100 standing. Two joined tipis seat about 160 and three seat about 240, with room for up to 300 standing.
What does the hire period cover?
Prices are for a full day, but the tent normally goes up the day before your event and comes down the day after. Longer hires can be quoted if you need it for more days.
Do the tents cope with bad weather?
The tipis were designed for harsh Arctic conditions and have sides that can be raised or lowered. Sperry tents have clear perspex walls that roll down. Only very strong winds would prompt a safety review.
What does the site need?
Ideally 4WD access, enough level ground for the layout, no flood risk and no buried services. If there is no power on site they can bring a generator, and a free site visit is offered for larger installs.
How do bookings and payments work?
After checking availability they send a quote, then an invoice. A 25 per cent deposit locks in the date and the balance is due two weeks before the event.
