About Sunday Kitchen
Sunday Kitchen is a Lebanese cooking experience run by mother and daughter Karima Hazim Chatila and Sivine Tabbouch, held at the Simon Johnson Cooking School at 24A Ralph Street, Alexandria. The sessions recreate the weekend lunches of their family home, pairing traditional recipes with the stories behind them. Classes are mostly demonstration with some hands-on cooking, which leaves time for questions and lets the kitchen produce a full spread of dishes. Each session follows a theme. The vegetarian session starts with rolling vine leaves and moves through mezza from around Lebanon, the fish session centres on the spicy tahini fish of Tripoli, and the breakfast session covers za'atar manoush, labneh and foul. Lamb, vegetarian and fish sessions run from 11am to 2pm, and breakfast sessions from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Private group bookings are available for up to 25 people, with dates and menus customised for the group, which suits birthdays, milestone lunches and work team days. You eat throughout: starters are cooked and shared early on, and the session finishes with everyone sitting down together to the main feast. A selection of Lebanese wines paired to each menu can be added at checkout, and all food is halal. Most dietary requirements can be accommodated if you mention them when booking. Everyone takes home a booklet with the recipes, local suppliers and a pantry list, and there is nothing to bring. Sessions regularly sell out, so book well ahead.
