About Caravan Dance Company
Caravan Dance Company was founded in 2000 by Devi Mamak, and was known as Ghawazi Caravan until recently. The company performs Modern Fusion Bellydance, sometimes called Tribal Bellydance: a style built on Middle Eastern dance with influences from East India, North Africa, flamenco and contemporary dance, presented theatrically with music, elaborate costume and group improvisation. Much of the repertoire uses FCBD Style, where dancers improvise together off shared cues rather than working to a fixed choreography, so the group reads as one while making the dance up in the moment. For events, the troupe brings flair, glamour and colour: weddings, hen's nights, corporate events and parties are all part of what they do, alongside regular appearances at local and regional festivals and community events. The format scales. At one end is a short, sweet duet that fits between courses at a dinner. At the other is a fully staged dance show with live musicians, which is what the company does at its own theatre shows with Devi Mamak and the Caravan Band, an ensemble of piano, sitar, saxophone and ney, bass, Egyptian tabla, drum kit and darabuka. In between sits a lively festival set of the kind they dance at street parades and outdoor events. The troupe is Devi Mamak, Catherine O'Brien, April Erzetich, Diane Vogt, Laura Kelly, Cristie Fuller and Sara Arrell. Most have been dancing for well over a decade, several since the company's earliest years, and between them they have trained in classical ballet, jazz, flamenco, Odissi and a range of Middle Eastern styles. The company is based in the Blue Mountains, works across the greater Sydney region, and travels further afield nationally and internationally.
