The Catering Department, often shortened to The Catering Dept, is a Sydney caterer based in Kingsgrove. A lot of its work is office catering, but it also runs full-service events such as cocktail parties, corporate functions and private celebrations like birthdays, with its own chefs, waitstaff and bartenders. The kitchen is led by head chef Ross Ku, who has more than 18 years in Sydney restaurants, hotels and event venues, including senior roles at Opera Bar and Peter Doyle at The Quay. For parties, the main options are canape event packages and buffet packages. Canape packages run from $52 to $108 per person and each includes handmade canapes, a dedicated chef and a food waiter for up to 2.5 hours, plus platters, dietary tags and cocktail napkins. The seasonal buffet range starts with The Local at $32.20 per person, a peri peri chicken, Cuban-style brisket and noodle salad spread, and goes up to The Social at $49.80 with Japanese-leaning dishes, for a minimum of 30 guests. There are also BBQ packages from $49.70 per person, sushi and grazing collections, and a drinks list built around NSW wines, beers and spirits. Delivery and drop-off orders need 72 hours notice, and full-service events with chefs and waitstaff need at least five days. Extra staff can be booked by the hour with a four-hour minimum, and if your venue has no kitchen, a kitchen setup or oven hire can be arranged for an extra fee. Menus are labelled for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and other requirements, and the team can also style events with dried florals and native botanicals.
