Buzz Speaker Hire has been hiring sound and lighting out of Tempe since 2014. The owners run parties themselves and started the business because they could not find a Sydney hire company stocking high end speakers at a sensible price. The stock reflects that. QSC tops and subwoofers cover most jobs, with Funktion-One, Void Acoustics, MM Acoustics, Nexo and Outline systems available when a room needs concert grade sound, and Pioneer CDJs and mixers, Technics turntables, Allen and Heath mixers and Shure microphones filling out the DJ side. Gear goes out as single items or as packs. The Bluetooth iPod Pack at $150 is the simplest way to get music into a backyard or a hall. The House DJ Party Pack at $340 adds Pioneer CDJs, a mixer and a monitor speaker so the DJ can hear what they are playing, and the Wedding Pack Basics sits at $290. Single QSC K12.2 tops start at $60 and the range builds up to full rigs with four subwoofers. Lighting covers par cans, moving heads, strobes, lasers, LED festoon and a Chauvet Gig Bar party package, with smoke, haze, fazer and bubble machines alongside it. Microphones, DJ tables, Megadeck staging, projectors, large LG screens and silenced four stroke generators are all on the list. Collect from the Tempe warehouse or have it delivered. Rates are published item by item on the site. The cheapest listed hire is a microphone stand at $10, with Shure wired microphones at $20. Speakers start at $60 for a single QSC K12.2 and $100 for a Bose S1 Pro battery speaker, with a pair of QSC K12.2 tops at $120, a QSC KS118 subwoofer at $90 and a pair of QSC KW153 tops at $240. Packages run from the $150 Bluetooth iPod Pack through the $290 Wedding Pack Basics to the $340 House DJ Party Pack, with Pioneer CDJ and mixer packs at $300 and $320. Lighting sits between $30 for a disco effect and $350 for an Astera Titan Tube kit, smoke, haze and bubble machines between $50 and $190, and screens go up to $900 for a 75 inch LG display. The hire stock covers speakers and subwoofers from QSC, Cerwin-Vega, Nexo, Funktion-One, Void Acoustics and MM Acoustics, battery powered Bose S1 Pro units for sites with no power, Pioneer CDJs, XDJ controllers and DJM mixers, Technics SL1210 turntables, Allen and Heath Xone mixers, Shure microphones and stands, DJ tables and Megadeck staging, par cans, moving heads, strobes, lasers, LED festoon and Wolfmix control, smoke, haze, fazer and bubble machines, projectors and large LG screens, backline and live audio mixers, and silenced four stroke generators with long extension leads for outdoor sites. Accessories such as leads, stands, bags, power boards and cases are treated as part of the hire and have to come back with the gear. You can collect from the Tempe warehouse, or Buzz will deliver and pick up through the city, inner west and eastern suburbs, with other areas quoted on request; delivery and setup are quoted separately from the equipment. The hire period starts when the equipment is dispatched and ends when all of it is back, with listed rates covering 24 hours. A $200 security deposit is paid upfront and refunded by direct deposit or cash after the gear is tested and checked, which can take five to ten business days, and it can be applied to repairs, replacement, cleaning or late returns. Outdoor or exposed events in forecast bad weather may attract an extra $1,000 deposit per speaker, subwoofer, CDJ or mixer. Photo identification with proof of address is photographed at handover, and the hirer is liable for water, sand, dust or sun damage.

How far ahead should I book?

Buzz asks you to call 1300 289 944 or email before paying so they can confirm the gear is free on your date, so it is worth checking as soon as the date is set. The booking is only locked in once the security deposit has been paid.

What does speaker hire cost?

A single QSC K12.2 is $60 and a pair is $120, a QSC KS118 subwoofer is $90 and a pair of QSC KW153 tops is $240. Lighting starts around $30 for a disco effect or par can, smoke machines from $50, and microphones from $20. Each rate covers a 24 hour hire.

Do they deliver, or do I collect?

Either. The warehouse is at 3/3 Wood Street, Tempe, and pickup from there is the cheapest option. Delivery and pickup are offered through the city, inner west and eastern suburbs, and other parts of Sydney are quoted on request.

Is there a bond, and what do I need at pickup?

A $200 security deposit is paid before the equipment is dispatched and returned once it has all been tested and checked, which can take five to ten business days. A photo of your identification showing your name, photo and address is taken at pickup or delivery. For outdoor events with forecast rain, storms, heavy winds, hail or severe heat, an additional $1,000 deposit per item may be applied.
