The two Surry Hills studios sit either side of the suburb's Central end. Cork & Chroma, at Shop 1/55 Holt Street off Crown Street, runs artist-led canvas sessions, and Hustle Studios fills two floors of a heritage-listed terrace at 457 Elizabeth Street, with the entrance around the corner on Rutland Street.

One is a set-format paint night you can join as a public seat or book privately; the other only takes private groups, and paints with glow-in-the-dark colour or potted succulents as readily as with acrylics.

Telling them apart:

Format: Cork & Chroma leads the room through one artwork step by step; Hustle Studios runs a menu of private workshops under the name Classes with Glasses.
Canvases: a 40 x 50cm painting to take home at Cork & Chroma, and a 30 by 30 centimetre fluoro canvas from Hustle's UV paint pouring class.
Group sizes: Cork & Chroma's private bookings start at 10 paid seats; Hustle's Paint and Plant class works for as few as four, and its acrylic class takes 10 to 20.
Prices: Cork & Chroma is from $69 per person and Hustle Studios from $100 per person.
Food and drink: both are BYO for drinks and food; Cork & Chroma supplies glassware, a fridge and a tea bar.

Central Station is the easy way to reach both. Street parking near Holt Street is limited, and Hustle's rooms are up a flight of stairs.

Hustle Studios can hand over its rooms on a self-service basis for up to 30 people, with a full-service option too.
