Funcats Watersports has run sailing hire from Coode Street in South Perth since 1975, when it began as a midweek sailing school for students. The base sits in Sir James Mitchell Park on the Swan River, facing the city skyline across the water. The main draw is the fleet of Hobie Wave catamarans, hired by the boat, alongside stand up paddle boards and single or double kayaks. Do we need any sailing experience to hire a catamaran?
No. The Funcats staff give first-timers some basic tuition, plus a demonstration where needed, before they head out, and that lesson is part of the hire price rather than coming out of your time on the water.
Does a group need to book ahead?
Bookings are only needed for three or more catamarans, since boats return to the beach regularly through the day. Paddle boards and kayaks are worth reserving ahead, though same-day bookings are also taken.
How much does hire cost?
A Hobie catamaran is listed at $66 a boat, a stand up paddle board is $27.50 for one hour or $44 for two, and kayaks start from $27.50. Prices shown on the booking page can vary, so confirm the rate when booking.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel with at least 24 hours notice for a full refund or credit, and the same applies if the operator calls off a booking because of weather. Online bookings close 18 hours before the start, and no-shows pay in full.
