About Currumbin Alley Surf School
Currumbin Alley Surf School has been teaching people to surf at the Alley since 1993. Lessons run all year at a spot known for gentle, sand-bottom waves, which makes it a kinder place to start than the more exposed beaches on the Gold Coast. For a group of friends, a private lesson is the natural choice. You can bring a mate or a whole crew, and the coaching is shaped around your fitness, experience and any requests. If a private group includes nervous young swimmers, an assistant instructor can join for a little extra. Regular group classes also run daily and suit anyone keen to learn alongside others. Students normally work at a ratio of about six to one, with extra instructors in the water for bigger groups. Children under 14 and adults usually go into separate groups. Each lesson lasts 90 minutes. Beginners start with 15 to 20 minutes on the sand covering safety, board handling, paddling, standing and choosing a wave, then head into waist to chest deep water with an instructor close by. Look for the large branded truck by the entry to the Currumbin Alley carpark, which is where every lesson meets. Toilets, changing rooms and free showers are across the road, and valuables can go in a small locker during the lesson. Send an enquiry with your numbers and preferred time.

Frequently asked questions
Can our group have a private lesson to ourselves?
Yes. Private lessons can be one to one, or you can bring a mate or a group of mates. Coaching is shaped around your level, fitness and anything specific you would like to work on.
How many students does each instructor take?
The maximum allowed ratio is eight students to one instructor, but the school aims for about six to one. When a group is larger than six, more instructors join in the water.
Who can join a lesson, and is there an age limit?
Group and private lessons are open to anyone aged 5 and over. During school terms, midweek group classes are for ages 15 and up, and a parent is advised in the water for young or nervous swimmers.
What do we need to bring?
Only swimming bottoms, sunscreen and a towel. The school supplies soft surfboards, wetshirts and wetsuits if required, and there are toilets, change rooms and free showers across the road.
Do lessons still run in the rain?
Yes, rain does not stop a lesson. Sessions are only cancelled for lightning or unsafe surf. If you need to change your own booking, the school asks for 24 hours notice before the class.
