About Broadbeach Surf School
Broadbeach Surf School is a small team of local surf coaches who run lessons from a van parked by the beach. Their permit covers the stretch of sand from Australia Avenue to Wharf Road, and they set up wherever the waves look good inside it. Group lessons suit people new to the sport and cover warm-ups, ocean awareness, catching waves and getting to your feet. Numbers stay small so nobody gets lost in a crowd. Private lessons take up to six people and are shaped around the ability of your group. Bigger bookings are handled directly with the team. They take hens and bucks parties, birthday celebrations, corporate events, school groups and university clubs, so send an enquiry with your numbers and preferred date. The beach has a sandy bottom with a mix of wave types, and it is less crowded than many others on the Gold Coast. Water temperatures rarely fall below 20 degrees, and dolphins are regular visitors, with whales passing through in winter and spring. All coaches hold Academy of Surfing Instructors qualifications, and they regularly refresh their first aid, resuscitation and ocean rescue training. A basic level of fitness helps, and the school suggests you can comfortably swim a 25 metre pool length. Conditions are watched closely, so if a lesson cannot go ahead you are offered another time or a full refund.

Frequently asked questions
Can you host a hens or bucks group?
Yes. Hens and bucks parties are on the list of larger bookings the school takes, along with birthdays and corporate events. Send an enquiry with your numbers so the team can plan the lesson.
How many people fit in a lesson?
Private lessons take up to six people, and group lessons are deliberately kept small. Anything bigger is arranged directly with the team as a larger group or corporate booking.
Do we need to be good swimmers?
Ocean conditions here can be challenging at times, so the school recommends some fitness and the ability to swim a 25 metre pool length before you try surfing.
What should we bring on the day?
Bring swimwear, a towel, a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle and beach footwear, and arrive already changed. Boards, a rash shirt, a wetsuit if needed and storage for valuables are all provided.
Where do we meet the instructors?
All lessons meet at the surf van in the free carpark opposite 1/5 Broadbeach Boulevard. The van is not always there outside lesson times, so visits are by appointment only.
