Find the Right Cooking Class in Rosebery

Getting Cooking Classes Right

Rosebery's converted warehouses house a good share of the inner south's food and design businesses, and two of them are cooking schools that take groups. VIVE Cooking School, in The Cannery on Mentmore Avenue, runs three-hour chef-led classes across more than 30 cuisines in a large teaching kitchen. Omnom Cooking School, on Botany Road, is a cheese making school where groups stretch burrata and bocconcini or roll pasta over about two hours, usually with a drink in hand. One suits a work team wanting a full cooking project, and the other suits a hens party or birthday after something lighter and more social.

Comparing the two for your group:

  • Getting there: buses serve Rosebery and street parking is easier than in the city. VIVE puts the trip at about 15 minutes from the CBD and Sydney Airport.
  • The experience: at VIVE a chef demonstrates each dish and you cook it at a shared station before everyone eats together. At Omnom you get a demonstration, a little cheese science and plenty of hands-on work.
  • Group size: VIVE's private events suit 2 to 30+ guests, and Omnom's burrata class can take up to 26, with groups of more than 8 pointed towards a private class.
  • Booking lead time: give either school your dietary requirements when you book. Omnom takes a $50 deposit to lock in a private date.
  • Food and drinks: VIVE is fully licensed with no BYO. Omnom's classes include bubbles or a drink on arrival, and its midweek class is BYO wine with $8 corkage.

Prices differ a fair bit. Omnom starts from $69 per person midweek, with its bottomless bubbles burrata class from $89 per person on weekdays and $109 on weekends. VIVE's public classes run $160 to $220 per person, and corporate events start from $190 plus GST per person, with the chef, assistant, ingredients, aprons, set-up and clean-up all handled. At VIVE you finish with a shared meal, and Omnom's burrata class sends you home with almost 1kg of fresh cheese.
