How Escape Rooms Actually Work

Escape rooms in Parramatta start with Labyrinth Escape Rooms on Victoria Road, across from Coles, which bills itself as the area's first real-life escape room. It has six themed rooms, Outbreak, Insane Asylum, Mexican Cartel, Game Night, CirCurse and Zen, and each is booked privately, so your group never shares a game with strangers. Teams are led in blindfolded, hear the storyline, then have 60 minutes to search the room and solve their way out. It's a good fit for birthdays, team building and Christmas parties in Sydney's second CBD, where plenty of workplaces want something more engaging than a long lunch.

What to expect:

Getting there: Parramatta station and the Parramatta Light Rail serve the centre. There's no onsite parking, but three-hour parking sits across the road at Entrada/Coles, entered from Ross Street.
The experience: 60 minutes of searching, clue-hunting and puzzle-solving, with Outbreak and CirCurse rated hard and the rest medium.
Group size: each room takes 2 to 8 players, and around 50 can start in the same time slot across multiple rooms.
Booking lead time: book ahead if you need several rooms starting together, and arrive 15 minutes early for the induction and waivers.
Food and drinks: weekday groups of 15 or more can add catering, available Monday to Friday before 5pm.

Pricing is $60 per person for groups of 2 to 8, dropping to $50 per person for bookings of 15 or more. You pay a $60 deposit per room upfront and can change numbers on the day, so a late drop-out doesn't cost the group. Players aged 12 and under need an adult in the room, while teens aged 13 to 17 can play on their own, which makes it workable for teen birthdays too.

Outbreak and CirCurse are rated hard, suited to groups who've done escape rooms before.
