About Ricardo Steyer

Guitarist and singer Ricardo Steyer comes from Porto Alegre in Brazil and has called Sydney home since 2012. His early years were spent in Brazilian rock and pop-rock bands in the early 2000s, and after the move to Australia he turned his attention to Brazilian music. Since 2015 he has played mainly the 7-string guitar, which he learnt at the Raphael Rabello choro school with Fernando César as his teacher. Here in Sydney he has supported international touring acts at The Concourse Chatswood and The Factory Theatre, and since 2014 he's helped grow the city's choro scene. There are a few different acts to choose from. Solo, he plays guitar and sings bossa nova, samba and MPB, drawing on Caetano Veloso, Djavan, Chico Buarque, Joao Gilberto and Tom Jobim. Steyer Brothers pairs him with his brother on guitar for Brazilian guitar pieces, instrumental bossa nova and jazz standards. The Ricardo Steyer Choro Ensemble plays traditional and modern choro, bringing in players on flute, clarinet, sax, mandolin and pandeiro. For a party there's Brasilidades, his samba and groove outfit, which comes down to a 3 to 5 piece for private and corporate bookings. The solo and duo acts work well for wedding ceremonies, cocktail hours, dinners and galas, where the music should stay in the background while people talk.
