Chippendale suits couples who want a city wedding with some character rather than a ballroom. It sits just south-west of Central, around the Central Park precinct and Kensington Street's laneway dining, and its two listed venues offer genuinely different receptions: the private poolside rooftop at The Old Clare Hotel, and The Private Kitchen, a long-table dining room in The Old Rum Store that is hired exclusively and cooked for by rotating resident chefs. One is built for mingling under the skyline, the other for a seated dinner where the food is the centrepiece.

How the two compare:

• Central station is a short walk from both, which helps guests arriving by train from interstate or regional NSW. Parking in Chippendale is limited, so plan shuttles or rideshare.
• Rooftop @ The Old Clare Hotel is open-air, with a pool, cabanas, city views and a dance floor; The Private Kitchen is an indoor long-table room with a chef-led menu.
• The rooftop holds up to 100 guests. The Private Kitchen seats up to 64 or takes 110 standing, so a larger cocktail reception or a smaller seated dinner both fit.
• Spring and summer Saturdays go first at both, so enquire as early as you can, often a year or more ahead for a peak date.
• The rooftop is from $8,000 minimum spend, with catering and drinks through the hotel. The Private Kitchen is from $2,000 minimum spend; ask which resident chef is cooking around your date.

The choice mostly comes down to format. If you picture sunset photos, a pool deck and a dance floor in one private space, the rooftop is the natural fit, with a wet-weather plan agreed early. If you would rather sit everyone at long tables for a proper dinner and speeches, The Private Kitchen keeps it intimate and costs considerably less to secure. Couples with around 60 guests could realistically do either, so compare menus as closely as the rooms.
