About Fremantle Prison
Fremantle Prison stands at 1 The Terrace in Fremantle and was built by convicts in the 1850s. It operated as a maximum-security jail until 1991 and is now a World Heritage-listed site, visited only on guided tours. Walking into the Gatehouse costs nothing, and it holds a visitor centre, the convict depot and a gift shop. Three one-hour day tours each cover a different chapter: the convict era, life inside the modern gaol, and the criminal stories behind its walls, and groups can combine two or all three. The Torchlight Tour runs for 90 minutes after dark through the main cell block, solitary confinement, the gallows and the morgue, with some jumps built in. The Tunnels Tour lasts two and a half hours, with participants harnessed onto a ladder system to descend about 20 metres before boarding replica punts to reach flooded sections. Groups of ten or more adults pay a reduced rate, and teams, social clubs and youth groups can arrange exclusive tours, with minimum numbers that vary by tour. Parties needing several Tunnels Tour slots can add a short highlights tour so everyone arrives and leaves together. Some tours cover confronting themes, including executions and violence, so it is worth checking the content notes before booking. The prison's heritage spaces can also be hired for functions if a group wants a meal or drinks after the tour.
