Choosing a Tasting Experience

Greater Fremantle's spirits experiences all sit under one roof: Republic of Fremantle Distillery, a grape-to-glass producer on Pakenham Street. For groups elsewhere in the region, that means a trip into central Fremantle.

Its stills turn grapes into vodka and gin, and the experiences run within sight of them.

Two ways to taste or make spirits on Pakenham Street:

  • Gin School: two hours on the mezzanine, opening with a G&T and a brief history lesson before guests design a recipe.
  • Each Gin School guest works their own mini still and bottles 500ml of the result.
  • The tour and tasting: a guided look at how the vodka and gin are made, ending at the bar with a drink.
  • Over 10,000 people have taken part in the gin class.
  • Prices for these experiences start at $30 per person.

Using Gin School for a Christmas or staff event

  • The bottle each person makes becomes the gift, so there's no need for a separate one.
  • Teams bigger than ten may ask for a private class instead of joining the public Friday and weekend sessions.
  • Add a function in the Distillery Hall, the Mezzanine or the Parklet if the night continues.
  • Da Napoli's pizza and pasta, served in the building, covers dinner.

Questions to answer before booking the distillery

  • Does the group want to make something, or would a tasting be enough?
  • Do Friday or weekend session times suit, or is a private class needed?
  • Will the event stay on for food or move on?
  • Is anyone in the group not drinking, and how will they take part?

Common Questions About Tasting Experiences

What do Gin School guests take home?

A 500ml bottle of gin made to their own recipe on a mini copper pot still.

Is there a shorter option than Gin School at the distillery?

Yes, the guided tour and tasting, which finishes with a vodka soda or a gin and tonic.

What are Republic of Fremantle's spirits made from?

Grapes grown in Western Australia, rather than grain.

Where can a big group celebrate after a distillery session?

The Distillery Hall, the Mezzanine, the Parklet or the whole venue can be booked for larger events.
