About Rod's BBQ Pontoon Hire

Rod's BBQ Pontoon Hire is run by Rod and Robyn from the marina on Cabbage Tree Point Road at Woongoolba. Signage may read Pacific Point Marina, the marina's later name. They hire out two pontoons you drive yourselves, with no licence needed, so the group has the whole boat for the outing. Rod 1 carries up to 10 and comes with side tables, a Weber, a 43 litre esky, mesh blinds, a three-speaker Bluetooth stereo and a toilet. Rod 2, the Allrounder, is larger at 7.49 metres long and takes 12, adding a teak table with ice inserts, a prep table and sink, party lights and a bow thruster. The Allrounder can also be skippered, and the operator names corporate events and birthdays among its uses. A map on board marks the operating area, which runs from Cabbage Tree Point down to Tipplers Restaurant and across to the South Stradbroke lagoon and sandhills, so there is room to swim, fish or simply drift. Everyone arrives early for a safety induction. The nominated skipper must be 18 or older, and some boating experience helps on Rod 1, while experience with large boats is essential to self-drive the Allrounder. Plan on bringing your own food, drinks and towels, and the operator looks after cleaning the BBQ afterwards. Pets stay ashore apart from assistance dogs, and smoking is not allowed on board. Frequently asked questions

How many people fit on the pontoons?

Rod 1 BBQ Pontoon is licensed for up to 10 people and Rod 2 Allrounder for up to 12. Both are hired as a whole boat, so your group has it to itself.

Who can drive the boat, and do we need a licence?

No licence is needed, but the nominated skipper must be at least 18 and stay within the legal alcohol limit of under 0.05. Boating experience helps on Rod 1 and is essential on the Allrounder unless you ask about having it skippered.

What should we bring for the BBQ?

Bring your own food, drinks and towels. The Weber and a 43 litre esky are on board, the bins are supplied, and the operator cleans the BBQ at the end of the hire. Drinking is not allowed at the marina on arrival.

Where can we go and can we swim?

A map marks the permitted area, from Cabbage Tree Point south to Tipplers Restaurant and east to the South Stradbroke lagoon, beach and sandhills. Swimming is easy off the boat, and rod holders and a bait board are fitted for fishing.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

The operator checks the forecast on the morning of hire and can call off a trip by 6.30am. Winds of 20 knots or more or severe weather mean moving your booking to another date, with the deposit held as a credit rather than refunded.
