About XL Surfing Academy
XL Surfing Academy is Robbie Sherwell’s surf school on the central Sunshine Coast, teaching at Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba. Each day the coaches pick whichever beach has safer conditions, and surfers get a text with the meeting point before their first lesson. The coaches hold Surfing Australia qualifications, and the school teaches everyone from first-timers to surfers moving on from the white water to green waves. A lesson runs for about an hour. It opens with stretches and technique practice on the sand for 10 to 15 minutes, then roughly 45 minutes in the water learning to paddle, catch white water and stand up. Beginner groups are kept small, and private group lessons for two or more give a coach time to work on each person’s technique. The school also lists corporate group lessons for workplaces. Lessons suit anyone from four years old, as long as they can manage basic swimming such as a dog paddle. The school supplies boards, rash shirts and wax, plus wetsuits when the water is cooler. Surfers bring swimwear, a towel, water and sunscreen already applied. Everyone should arrive 15 minutes early to be matched with a coach and given a board.
