About Blue Tortuga Adventures
Blue Tortuga Adventures is a family-run freediving and spearfishing outfit based in Coolum Beach. Founder Alex Moraitis is a freediving and spearfishing instructor, a skipper and a PADI dive instructor, and he brings more than 30 years of ocean work to every trip. Training starts in the Coolum Beach classroom and local pools, then moves offshore to reefs such as Mudjimba Island, Gneering Shoals and Barwon Banks. Beginners are welcome, and the two-day courses cover theory and pool work before the boat day. Groups can join small-group spearfishing and freediving charters on local reefs. A private offshore charter takes up to 10 people, mixing freediving, spearfishing and island exploring to suit the group. For anyone new to breath-hold diving there are pool-based try-a-freedive and learn-to-snorkel sessions, plus PADI freediver and skin diving courses. Course gear is included, and boat days come with snacks and refreshments. Guests may bring their own alcohol, but anyone who has a drink stays out of the water for the rest of the trip. Friends who would rather stay dry can ride along on deck. Send an enquiry with your group size and the kind of day you have in mind.

Frequently asked questions
Do we need ocean experience to join a trip or course?
No. The instructors coach beginners through relaxation and safety techniques, and the courses run over two days, with the first day spent on theory and pool sessions to build confidence before going out on the boat.
Can our group book the boat privately?
Yes. A private offshore charter takes up to 10 people and can be tailored to freediving, spearfishing, island exploring or a mix, set to the skill level of everyone in the group.
Is food included and can we bring drinks?
Day trips include snacks and refreshments, and dietary requirements are catered for when you mention them. You can bring your own alcohol, but once someone starts drinking they cannot get back in the water. The boat is non-smoking.
Can friends who do not want to dive come along?
Yes. Non-divers can relax on the boat while the rest of the group gets in the water. Because they still take up a seat, they are charged the cheapest activity price of $150.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If a trip is called off for weather, the team first tries to move you to another date that suits. If that does not work, you receive a full refund. Taking seasickness tablets an hour before departure is strongly recommended.
