About Glow Worm Caves

Glow Worm Caves is a privately owned conservation site on Tamborine Mountain, set within the grounds of Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery. Its cave was built for the purpose, so a local glow worm colony can be seen in daylight hours without anyone disturbing a wild habitat. Entry is by guided tour only, and the controlled conditions mean every visitor sees the colony glowing. Each tour lasts 30 minutes and sets off from the garden area, following a short rainforest boardwalk to the cave. A guide screens a brief documentary, then leads everyone through a darkened tunnel where thousands of glow worms shine overhead and one can be viewed up close. There is no hiking, climbing or crawling, although steps at the entrance mean the cave cannot take wheelchairs or prams. Parties of 10 or more can ask about group packages that combine the tour with the estate's restaurant and wine centre. Frog Hollow, a self-guided display of tree frogs and invertebrates, is included with every tour. The estate also has a cafe, a gallery and cellar door tastings for guests aged 18 and over, which gives a birthday group or family outing plenty to fill the rest of the visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a package for a larger group at Glow Worm Caves?

Yes. Groups of 10 or more can ask about packages built around the tour with the restaurant and wine centre at Cedar Creek Estate. Send an enquiry with your numbers to see what is available.

How long does the glow worm tour take?

Tours take 30 minutes, covering a short rainforest walk, a brief film and the guided walk through the cave. Please arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of your start time, as late arrivals can lose their spot.

Can children come on a birthday outing to the cave?

Yes, all ages are welcome and the operator names birthdays as a good fit. Noise disturbs the glow worms, so young children need to stay quiet, and little ones must be carried because prams stay in the gift shop.

Can guests take photos or use a torch inside the cave?

No. Photos, video, artificial light and light-up shoes are all kept out of the cave because they interfere with the glow. Photos are fine on the way to the cave and on the way back out.

Will the tour still run if it rains on Tamborine Mountain?

Yes. The cave is undercover and open through the year, closing only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. A rain jacket is a good idea on a wet day because the walk to the cave passes through rainforest.

It was a nice short tour of the glow worm caves, which means we didn't really need to go into the wilderness. The guide was able to answer my questions and the group size was manageable.
