About Mas & Miek Ceramic House

Mas & Miek Ceramic House is a pottery studio on Byres Street in Newstead, opened by ceramic artists Mieke De Deyne and her daughter Charlie. Alongside the teaching studio there is a café and a gallery store selling work by local potters. Private group bookings run for roughly two to two and a half hours with a teacher just for your group. There are three ways to spend it: hand building a piece each, painting a ready-made bisque pot with underglazes, or learning the basics on the pottery wheel. The studio can shape a session around a theme, such as mugs for the office or a vase-making baby shower. Guests can BYO drinks and arrange their own catering for the event. Prices cover the teacher, clay, glazes and all materials, plus the firing and glazing done by staff afterwards. Finished pieces can be picked up a few weeks after the event. Wheel places are limited, as the Newstead studio has 10 wheels. The studio is mostly for adults, and teens can join a workshop when an adult books in with them. Send an enquiry with your preferred date and group size to book.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private group workshop cost?

The underglaze decorating workshop is $145 per person, hand building is $180 per person and the pottery wheel workshop is $210 per person. Each includes a private teacher, materials and firing.

What is the minimum group size?

Private group bookings need at least 10 people. Smaller groups can still book privately if they are happy to pay the 10 person minimum fee.

Can we bring drinks and food?

Yes. Groups are welcome to BYO and to cater the event however they like during their time in the studio. There is also a café on site.

Do we take our pieces home on the day?

No. Every piece needs to be dried, bisque fired and glaze fired, so the studio finishes the work and it is ready to collect a few weeks later. Work is stored for one month.

Can teenagers or children join?

The studio is a working space with hot and sharp hazards, so it is mainly for adults. Teens can take part when an adult also books in, but children are not permitted in workshops.
