About MJC Botanical
MJC Botanical is a plant-craft studio run by Melissa from Mappins Nursery on Montague Road in West End. Guests sit down to a guided class and leave with a living piece they built themselves. The menu covers closed terrariums, kokedama moss balls, small and large living wreaths, zen sculptural gardens in bonsai pots, botanical sculptures bound onto timber and vivariums. Plants, moss, gravel, substrate and tools are supplied. The standard terrarium class asks you to bring a sealed glass jar, which can also be bought at the nursery beforehand. Classes run for about two hours and finish with a run-through of light, watering and ongoing care. Groups stay small so the teacher can help each person, typically up to 18 at a time, and several workshops add light refreshments and drinks from local makers. For a birthday, bridal shower or corporate event, MJC Botanical builds a private workshop around the group, with a minimum of six guests. Depending on numbers and the project, the class can sometimes run at another location. Send an enquiry with your date, headcount and preferred workshop to plan it.

Frequently asked questions
Can we book a private workshop for our group?
Yes. MJC Botanical runs private workshops for birthdays, bridal showers, corporate events and other private groups, with a minimum of six people. The project, numbers and price are worked out with you, so send an enquiry with your details.
How much do the workshops cost?
Public workshops are priced per person and start at $105 for kokedama. The terrarium class is $115, botanical sculptures $145, the zen sculptural garden $175, the large living wreath $195 and the large terrarium $250. Private groups are quoted to suit.
Do we need to bring anything?
All plants and materials are included in the fee for every workshop except the standard terrarium class, where you bring your own closed glass vessel. Suitable jars and vessels can be bought at Mappins Nursery before the class starts.
Can children take part?
Children are welcome and there is no set age limit, so parents decide whether a workshop suits their child. Anyone under 13 needs an adult taking part alongside them during the class.
Is the workshop space accessible?
Workshops are held in an upstairs space at Mappins Nursery reached by stairs, with no lift. With plenty of notice and a small group, the studio may be able to rearrange things for guests who cannot manage stairs.

A truly magical experience watching an ordinary glass vessel suddenly become a living ecosystem in a matter of 2 hours. Melissa is an excellent teacher I thoroughly recommend her workshops to anyone.
