Choosing a Tasting Experience

On the first floor of 119 Harris Street, Sydney Wine Centre runs The Vineyard – a private tasting room on the harbourside peninsula west of Darling Harbour that has hosted wine tastings, appreciation courses and group events since 2009. Rather than offering one set menu, the team designs each private tasting around the people coming, so a bridal party, a fortieth or a department lunch can each get a different line-up of wines and food. What a Pyrmont tasting can look like:

  • A seated table of up to 18 in The Vineyard on Level 1
  • A cheese and wine evening matching nine French wines with nine cheeses
  • A Discover night tasting through Italy or Spain with a dozen or more wines and matched food
  • A blend-your-own-wine session built for team building
  • Bigger gatherings moved to the Stables conservatory at Gallon next door, or to your office

Private tastings start from $125 per person, nights are relaxed with no pressure to buy the wines poured, and every guest must be 18 or over.

Who a Harris Street tasting suits

  • Hens parties – a tailored tasting gives the bride-to-be and her friends a hosted, social few hours before dinner
  • Birthdays and reunions – the room seats up to 18, so a milestone group can sit together around one tasting
  • Work teams – choose a seated structured tasting for a small team or a standing networking tasting for larger numbers
  • Wine-curious friends – longer courses cover tasting technique, grape varieties and food matching

The people pouring

  • Presenters include Rob Geddes, a Master of Wine, and Paul Huet
  • Guests are encouraged to ask questions as each wine is opened
  • Food can be matched to the wines rather than served as an afterthought
  • When a group outgrows The Vineyard, the team uses restaurants and offices across the city
