Choosing a Tasting Experience

Joadja is a valley settlement built for shale mining in the 1870s, and its ruins are home to Joadja Distillery. Valero and Elisa Jimenez run the distillery and care for the historic town, which gives a team-building tasting here an unusual backdrop.

A Joadja team tasting runs in this order:

  • The story first: the head distiller opens with how the distillery started and the history of the old mining town.
  • A look at production: the group is shown how the spirits are made.
  • Tasting at the table: guests sit down to small samples of about ten spirits and liqueurs.
  • Mixers and snacks: tonic and soda come with the gins and liqueurs, and cheese, olives and nuts are set out.
  • A keepsake: everyone takes home a Joadja tasting glass.

The private session is $59 per person and suits teams of 8 to 16.

What the Joadja Distillery range covers

  • Single malt whisky is the focus, distilled from barley grown on the property.
  • Spring water drawn from the escarpment goes into the spirit.
  • Casks that once held Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez, sourced from Spain, are used for ageing.
  • Gin, rum, brandy, vermouth and an anise liqueur sit alongside the whisky.

Booking a Joadja Valley team-building tasting

  • Allow at least five working days between your enquiry and the date.
  • Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes, leaving room for a picnic on the lawns afterwards.
  • Numbers between 8 and 16 fit the private seated format.
  • The guided look at production makes it a learning session as much as a tasting.
