About Joadja Distillery
Joadja Distillery is a family-run spirits maker set inside an abandoned shale mining settlement from the 1870s, deep in the Joadja Valley. Valero and Elisa Jimenez, who also look after the historic town, started the distillery, drawing on the Scottish miners who once made their own grog in the valley. The focus is single malt whisky. The barley is grown on the property, the water comes from a spring in the escarpment, and the spirit is aged in ex-Oloroso and ex-Pedro Ximenez casks sourced from Spain. Gin, anise liqueur, rum, brandy and vermouth round out the range. For a team day or a social outing, the private Intimate tasting is a seated event for 8 to 16 guests, led by the head distiller and lasting 60 to 90 minutes. It opens with the story of the distillery and the old town, moves through a guided look at production, then settles in for small samples of roughly ten spirits and liqueurs. Tonic and soda are poured alongside the gins and liqueurs, and a casual spread of cheese, olives and nuts is served. Each guest goes home with a Joadja tasting glass. On weekends the cellar door also runs free walk-in tours and tastings, and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and settle on the lawns. For a private group booking, send an enquiry with your numbers and date at least five working days ahead.

Frequently asked questions
How many people do we need for a private tasting?
The private Intimate tasting needs at least 8 guests to book as a private group, and the distillery suggests it for groups of about 8 to 16 because it is a seated event.
What does the private group tasting cost and include?
Packages start at $59 per person for six 10mL samples. The $79 per person Intimate tasting adds 5mL samples of about ten products, a guided distillery tour, nibbles, mixers and a branded glass to keep.
How long does a private tasting run, and who hosts it?
Allow 60 to 90 minutes. The head distiller hosts the session, so there is time to ask questions and see more of how the whisky, gin and liqueurs are produced.
Is there food at the tasting?
An informal platter of cheese, olives and nuts is served during the Intimate tasting. On weekend visits guests are welcome to bring their own picnic lunch and set up under cover or on the grass.
Can we visit the historic Joadja town as well?
The historic site can only be entered on fully guided heritage tours, which are booked separately through Joadja Town. The distillery itself sits within the old settlement, so the setting comes with every tasting.
