Choosing a Trail Ride

Is your child pony-mad? Trish Boys built Valley Park Riding School on her own land at 86 Obriens Ln, Templestowe, and alongside lessons for every level – from a first time in the saddle to show jumping, dressage and cross country – it runs holiday programs, equine therapy and birthday parties on horseback.

Choosing between a pony and a unicorn party:

  • Ages eight and up – a pony party takes six to nine riders, and six- and seven-year-olds can book one as a group of six.
  • In the arena – each child rides a pony of their own for a private hour-long group ride.
  • Under six – a unicorn party gives the group one decorated pony for the hour, and every little one takes a ride.
  • Looking after them – an instructor plus an assistant run the pony party, while a unicorn party comes with a dedicated handler and host.
  • Party base – pony parties get two hours in a private pergola above the arena; unicorn groups get BBQ use, a playground and their own party space.

Bookings are made by email, not through the lesson system online, and the school is open to custom arrangements for bigger groups or different times.

Running order of a pony party

  • First, 30 minutes to get everyone into helmets and boots while the ponies are readied.
  • Next, an hour-long private group ride with one pony per child.
  • Then two hours in the pergola overlooking the arena for the food and cake you bring.
  • Ask for a personalised digital invitation when you book.

Before the party day

  • Food and drinks are the family's job, and rubbish goes home with you.
  • Nuts and other allergens follow the usual school rules.
  • Skip balloons and shiny decorations – they can distract the horses, and staff may move them.
  • Riders need to be under 90 kg, in long pants and smooth-soled, fully enclosed shoes; with limited parking, share cars where you can.

Common Questions About Group Trail Rides

Which party suits my child's age at Valley Park?

Eight and older suits a pony party of six to nine riders, and six- and seven-year-olds can book one as a group of six. For children under six, the unicorn party is the one designed for them.

What's included in a Valley Park unicorn party?

An hour with a unicorn pony so each child gets a ride, a dedicated handler and host, activities supplied, private BBQ use, a playground and two hours in the party area.

Who brings the food to a riding party?

Parents do – all food and drinks. Stick to school-style allergen rules such as no nuts, and pack up your rubbish to take home.

How do we book a riding party in Templestowe?

By email rather than the online lesson system. The school can discuss custom options for bigger groups or different times.
