Getting Cooking Classes Right

Churros for dessert, a jug of sangria on the bench and a pan of paella built from the rice up – that's one class's work in Lola Migliore's kitchen. Cooking with Lola sits on the ground floor of Mercato Centrale, 546 Collins St, and its classes lean on the food of Spain and Latin America, with music in the background and a few words of Spanish picked up along the way.

Lola grew up in Buenos Aires, in a family of Italian and Spanish heritage, and was a trained musician before she switched to cooking.

Private group menus on offer:

  • Traditional paella – the classic, finished with churros.
  • Tapas – a run of pintxos and small plates, ending in a squid ink paella.
  • Argentinian – chimichurri, choripán, chocotorta and a veal schnitzel sandwich; heavy on meat and not adaptable for plant-based or pescatarian guests.
  • Peruvian dishes.
  • A Mexican spread.

Classes take roughly three hours, and the group finishes by sitting down together to the meal. Pricing starts from $190 per person.
