How Escape Rooms Actually Work

Glenferrie Road's shopping strip hides a three-room puzzle venue at number 606: Rush Escape Game Hawthorn. Every game lasts 60 minutes, and with the welcome, rules talk and a group photo at the finish, a visit takes about 90 minutes all up. Matching the room to the players:

  • Thrill-seekers aged 16 or over: HackSaw, a trap-filled horror game modelled on Saw, with some cramped spaces but moderate puzzles.
  • Serious puzzlers: Strangest Thing, an 80s monster mystery that is unsettling rather than scary and carries the hardest puzzles on site.
  • Younger players and the faint-hearted: The Nine-Nine, a light-hearted detective caper with zero scares, pitched at kids' parties from about age seven.
  • Squads of two to six: that's the range for each room, so three teams of six can play side by side.
  • Groups larger than 18: the venue books them in consecutive waves.

Prices are from $70 per person. No actors, no locked door, and on request the staff will turn up the lights, turn down the sound or brief anyone nervous before the game starts.
