Lawn Bowls: What to Look For

On the Fitzroy North end of Brunswick Street, right on the edge of Edinburgh Gardens, Fitzroy Victoria Bowling & Sports Club keeps a social green open to the public seven days a week. Groups book it for a few hours outdoors with a drink in hand – birthdays, hens and bucks days, work socials and end-of-year parties.

How a booking works here:

  • Ten synthetic rinks sit directly in front of the clubhouse bar and beer garden.
  • Sessions run for two hours and start on the hour.
  • Bowls, the rest of the gear and a short staff demo are covered by the hire fee.
  • Each rink takes eight to ten people; larger groups take more than one.
  • Prices start from $20 per person.

The only dress rule is about feet: bare feet, socks or flat-soled shoes, with no heels or spikes on the green.

Grilling, catering and the tab

  • Once a group passes 12, a private BBQ area comes into the booking – gas BBQ, tables, seating, a heater and marquee cover.
  • Bring your own food to cook, or order from one of the club's contracted caterers.
  • Takeaway and delivery aren't allowed, and drinks come from the licensed bar only.
  • A bar tab can be opened on arrival, with wristbands for guests.

Larger functions

  • For 60 to 100 guests there is a combined marquee, deck and bar area.
  • The clubhouse can be part-hired for bigger events.
  • Nobody eats, drinks or smokes on the green itself.
  • To lock in a session or function, send an enquiry.
