How Escape Rooms Actually Work

Inside an old warehouse at 28 Cromwell St, The Curium Experience runs one large escape game rather than a corridor of small rooms. Players begin in the plush clubrooms of a fictional society, step through a portal device called The Machine and land in Extraction – a mission to steal an artefact from a guarded lab, spread across several levels.

What sets this Collingwood game apart:

  • Full sets, lighting, sound and special effects carry the story from room to room.
  • Puzzles fit the plot, with moderate difficulty that suits first-timers.
  • Climbing stairs and crawling a tunnel about a metre high are part of the mission.
  • A dedicated game master follows each team on CCTV.
  • The night ends with packaged drinks and snacks in the licensed Recovery Lounge.

Tickets start from $49 per person. The game itself runs 50 to 70 minutes, but allow about 90 once the briefing, team photo and debrief are included.

Teams and big groups

  • Each team is two to seven players, and four is the sweet spot.
  • Groups of eight or more become several teams that start 30 minutes apart.
  • Staggered teams compete on time and score, which turns a birthday, hens or bucks day into a contest.
  • The game master runs through each team's result in the lounge afterwards.

Access and age limits

  • Most physical parts can be skipped on request, but the stairs can't.
  • The game isn't wheelchair accessible.
  • Doors are never locked, and every room has an emergency exit.
  • Under-eights can't play, and players aged 8 to 16 need two adults in their team.
