This café-cum-providore started out in 1868 as a grocery, and the Drews – owners since the late 1960s – have restored the Ascot Vale building adding a vintage-style garden full of greenery and a bluestone wine cellar.

Weekend afternoons are high tea time: Saturday and Sunday sittings last two hours, from 3pm until 5pm, in a light-filled room with air conditioning and an open fire.

A seasonal round of savouries, warm and chilled, ribbon sandwiches and the Drew family's own sausage rolls among them.
