Find the Right Cooking Class in St Kilda

Getting Cooking Classes Right

French bistro dishes one week, fresh pasta or Moroccan spice the next: the menus at Cooking on the Bay follow the seasons and local produce. The school is at 45-46 Marine Parade in St Kilda, run by Tonya Jennings, a chef who studied at Holmesglen before further training in France.

Classes never exceed nine cooks, which keeps everyone at a bench and busy.

The class themes include:

  • French bistro.
  • Italian, where fresh pasta always features.
  • Spanish, from paella to pintxos.
  • Mediterranean and Moroccan menus.
  • Desserts, and the low-carb Cook Real Food program.

Prices begin from $145 per person, with the kit – aprons, knives and printed recipes – handed out on arrival.

A full day versus a half day

  • The full-day class gets going at 8.45am, opening with a cuppa and a baked treat.
  • Lunch is served about 12.45pm – four courses the class has made, with wine – and the day ends close to 3.30pm.
  • The four-hour version wraps at 1pm, still with wine and a shared meal.
  • Pack a container for leftovers and come in closed shoes.

Bringing friends or family

  • Celebration of the Seasons is the festive class open to private parties of four upward.
  • Six or more can nominate a date of their own.
  • Friends who'd prefer not to cook may come for lunch at about 12.30pm.
  • The dining table looks over Port Phillip Bay, and a library of 3000-plus food books is on hand.
