Writing a Listing Description That Actually Converts

By Party Hero · 13 September 2026

A description that converts answers what a customer is actually deciding on — capacity, inclusions, price and fit — not just how you feel about your own business. Specific numbers beat generic adjectives every time.

Why most listing descriptions don't convert

Most supplier descriptions read the same way: friendly, positive, and completely interchangeable with the next ten listings in the same category. "We pride ourselves on delivering an unforgettable experience" could describe literally any boat, venue or entertainer in Sydney. It tells a customer nothing they can actually use to decide.

A description that converts does one job: it answers the specific questions a customer is silently asking before they'll bother sending an enquiry. For a party or event supplier, those questions are usually some mix of:

  • Can you actually fit my group?
  • What's roughly included, and what costs extra?
  • Are you the right vibe for this specific occasion?
  • Why you, over the five other listings I've got open in other tabs?

If your description doesn't answer those, a customer moves on to the listing that does – even if your business is genuinely the better fit.

Specifics beat adjectives, every time

"Spacious", "amazing", "premium" and "unforgettable" are the four most overused words in supplier descriptions, and they carry almost no information. Numbers, inclusions and constraints do the actual work:

Before: "Our boat offers a spacious deck and an amazing experience for your next celebration."

After: "Seats up to 40 guests across two private decks, with a fully stocked bar, sound system and BYO catering welcome. Ideal for 30th and 40th birthdays, engagement parties and corporate end-of-year functions."

The second version lets a customer self-qualify in five seconds – capacity, what's included, and who it's for. That's a faster, more confident "yes, enquire" than a paragraph of atmosphere.

The structure that works

You don't need to be a copywriter to get this right – you need a consistent shape:

  1. Open with what you are and who it's for – one sentence, no fluff. "A private harbourside function room for 20-80 guests, purpose-built for engagement parties and milestone birthdays."
  2. Capacity and format – exact numbers wherever you can give them (seated vs. standing, indoor vs. outdoor, minimum spend if relevant).
  3. What's included vs. what costs extra – this is the single biggest source of enquiry hesitation. Even a rough "from $X pp, catering and drinks packages available separately" beats total silence on price.
  4. What makes you different – a genuine point of difference (a specific view, a chef's background, an unusual capability), not a generic claim every competitor could also make.
  5. A light, specific close – name the occasions you're best suited to, so the right customers self-select in.

Let AI do the first draft, then make it yours

Party Hero's AI Content Writer (free on every listing) will generate a first-pass description, SEO title and meta description from a few prompts about your business – a genuinely useful way to get past a blank page, especially if writing isn't your thing. If you already have a website, Fill in from a web page will pull your existing content across and rewrite it to fit, so you're not starting from zero.

Either way, treat the AI draft as a first pass, not a final answer – add your own real numbers, your own point of difference, and anything a generated draft couldn't know about your business. Once it's live, Reword with AI lets you polish any section in place later – tightening the highlights, refreshing the pricing copy for a new season – with one click and full undo, so there's no reason a listing description should ever go stale.

The bottom line

A description that lists real capacity, real inclusions and a real point of difference will out-convert a beautifully written but generic one every time. Start with AI Content Writer if you're not sure where to begin, then spend ten minutes making it unmistakably about your business – that's the ten minutes that actually moves the enquiry needle.
