About Byron School of Clay
Byron School of Clay is a working pottery school on Friday Hut Road at Brooklet, a short way out of Newrybar. Alongside its term courses and beginner workshops, the studio runs private pottery parties for groups who want to make something together. Groups pick one of two styles. Wheel throwing puts each guest at a pottery wheel to learn wedging, centring and pulling up a cup or bowl. Hand-building suits anyone who would rather sit at a table and pinch, coil or shape their clay. A teacher leads the two-hour session from the first lump of clay, so nobody needs any experience. Each guest chooses the two pieces they like most, and the school trims, glazes and fires them. Finished work is ready to collect about four weeks later. For a smaller or more personal booking, the private wheel throwing workshop hands the whole studio to your group for two hours. The school is happy to talk through extras such as food platters or bubbly for a birthday, and to tailor the event to suit. The studio's classes are open to anyone aged 16 and over. Wear clothes and shoes that can take a bit of clay, and bring an old towel for your lap. Send an enquiry with your preferred date, time and numbers, and the school will check the studio calendar.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a pottery party and how many people do we need?
Party workshops run for two hours and cost $100 per person for groups of five or more. A private wheel workshop for one or two adults is $300 in total, and three or four adults pay $125 each.
Can we choose between the wheel and hand-building?
Yes. The party workshop comes in two versions, one on the pottery wheel and one using hand-building techniques, so the group can pick whichever the group prefers.
What do we take home, and when?
Each person keeps the two pieces they like most from the session. The school glazes and fires them after the class, and they are ready to collect from the studio about four weeks later.
Is there a minimum age for guests?
The school's classes are open to adults and anyone aged 16 or over, so plan a group with that age limit in mind before you send an enquiry.
What should guests wear or bring?
Clay gets everywhere, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes you do not mind getting dirty. Aprons, overalls and hair ties are a good idea, and an old towel for your lap helps keep clothes clean.
