About MUDDY Clay Play

MUDDY Clay Play is a hand-building clay studio on Shirley Street in Byron Bay, run by artist Alex. The studio treats clay as play and a form of mindfulness, so there is no set project to copy and no pressure to get it right. Private workshops are built for groups of five or more and run for two and a half to three hours. A tutor starts with a clay demonstration, then shows the group the core hand-building methods so each guest can shape whatever they have in mind, from mugs and bowls to something far less practical. Clay, tools and underglaze are on hand, and the studio glazes and fires the finished work. The studio names baby blessings, team bonding days and Christmas get-togethers among the events it hosts, and workshops can run at the Byron Bay studio or at a place of your choosing. Organic grazing boards can be added, herbal tea is served and guests are welcome to bring their own drinks. Send an enquiry with your date, numbers and a little about the event to book.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private clay workshop cost?

A private workshop without food is $135 per person for groups of five or more. Organic grazing boards can be added on top as an option.

How long does a private workshop run?

Private sessions take two and a half to three hours, which covers a clay demonstration, tutoring in hand-building and time to make your own pieces.

Does anyone in the group need pottery experience?

No. The workshops are designed for people who have never touched clay, as well as those who have, and the tutors adjust their guidance to each person.

Can we bring drinks or have food?

Yes. Bringing your own drinks is optional and allowed, herbal tea is provided, and organic grazing boards can be ordered as an extra for the group.

Do we take our pieces home on the day?

The studio glazes and fires the work after the session, as both are included in the price, so pieces are finished in the kiln before they go home with you.
