About Four Strings
Four Strings is a collective of classically trained string players based in Brisbane. The group plays as a quartet – two violins, a viola and a cello or double bass – or as a trio of violin, viola and cello or bass for a smaller line-up. Weddings make up much of the calendar, from the processional and signing of the register to the recessional and the reception that follows. The players also perform at engagement parties, wedding anniversaries, birthdays, dinner parties, fundraisers, corporate functions and office Christmas events. The repertoire leans classical but takes in light pop, jazz and contemporary pieces, and couples can choose ceremony music from the group's list. A piece that isn't on the list can often be bought or arranged for an extra fee, and a flute can stand in for one violin at no extra cost. The ensemble is run by the musicians rather than an agency, so fees go mainly to the players, who are paid super and covered by workers' compensation. The members have backgrounds in orchestras, chamber groups, musical theatre and touring bands. For longer bookings the group takes a ten-minute break each hour and is happy to time breaks around speeches. Send an enquiry to book a date, line-up and set length.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the quartet and the trio?
The quartet has two violins, a viola and a cello or bass, giving fuller harmonies. The trio drops one violin, which suits smaller budgets while still covering the classical repertoire.
Can we choose the pieces played at our ceremony?
Yes. Couples usually pick music for the bride's entrance, the signing of the register and the exit from the group's repertoire list, and other pieces can often be sourced or arranged for a fee.
What does the group need at the venue?
Four armless chairs, decent lighting and a playing area of roughly 3 by 5 metres. Outdoors the players need cover from sun and rain to protect their instruments, and a large shady tree works when it is dry.
Does Four Strings play anything besides classical music?
Yes. Alongside classical works the players perform light pop, jazz and contemporary pieces, so a dinner or cocktail set can mix styles to suit the crowd.
How do breaks work on longer bookings?
For bookings over an hour the players take a ten-minute break each hour, ideally during speeches. Bookings longer than three hours also need a meal and a twenty-minute meal break.
