About Billy Goat Karaoke
Billy Goat Karaoke is a hosted karaoke show based in Sydney, and the man running it is karaoke DJ Thommo, with almost 20 years at the microphone. In the Southern Highlands he hosts a Saturday karaoke night once a month at the Moss Vale Services Club, after the music bingo finishes. Private parties and corporate functions in the region can book the same hosted show. What sets it apart from a hired machine is the host. Thommo runs the order of singers, gauges the mood of the room and coaxes nervous first-timers up, taking a song himself only when the queue is empty. Singers hand up a slip, each person gets one song a round, and joining a duet or group song uses up that round for everyone involved. He brings the lot: PA, lighting, a screen showing the singer their lyrics, song books, slips, pens and props. For the audience, the venue provides a big TV or projector, and if there is none, a 42 inch screen can come with him for $22. His song list is online, and a missing track can usually be sourced if you request it by early in the week. A standard function show lasts three hours, and half-hour extensions are available while the queue keeps growing. Travel is charged at $55 per hour for the round trip, plus any tolls and parking. Equipment is never hired out without the host, and songs on USB sticks or YouTube cannot be played for licensing reasons.
