About Port Stephens 4WD Tours
Port Stephens 4WD Tours is a family business that has been driving guests onto the Stockton Bight dunes for more than two decades. Its accredited drivers hold first aid and Working With Children clearances, and they know the dune ecosystem well. The sand here climbs to around 30 metres in places, with slopes as steep as 60 degrees. The Unlimited Sandboarding Adventure uses a 4WD to carry the group across the dunes to the boarding area, where riders slide down seated as often as they like. The slope begins small for younger children and grows steeper further along, and parents can share a board with little ones. Stand-up boarding is not allowed. A shade tent with seating suits anyone who would rather watch, and everyone receives a bottle of water on arrival. Other options include a beach and dune drive, a Tin City trip and combination packages with a dolphin or whale cruise run by a partner operator. For a group outing, the operator offers private departures with flexible times and tailored inclusions, aimed at birthday parties, conference and corporate groups, seniors clubs and interest groups. Each 4WD carries up to 21 passengers, and with four or five vehicles on the sand each day, bigger groups can be split across several. Tours run in rain or shine and only stop for thunderstorms. Send an enquiry to plan a private group departure.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the sandboarding tour cost?
The Unlimited Sandboarding Adventure is $45 for riders aged 15 and over and $40 for children aged 4 to 14, with a family ticket for two adults and two children at $150. Children under 4 pay a small infant fare, and prices include GST and the National Parks levy.
Can a large group travel out to the dunes together?
Yes. Each 4WD seats up to 21 passengers and four or five vehicles run each day, so groups bigger than 21 are sent out across extra vehicles. Private departures can also be arranged for birthday parties and corporate groups.
How long does the sandboarding adventure last?
Allow roughly an hour. Departures leave on the half hour from 9:30am, and the 3:30pm trip is capped at one hour, so an earlier start gives the group more time on the slopes.
Can young children sandboard?
Yes. The boarding dune starts with small slopes for children and gets bigger further along, and parents can ride tandem with a child on the same board. A parent or guardian signs the disclaimer for anyone under 18.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
Tours operate rain, hail or shine every day except Christmas Day. Only thunderstorms stop operations, and in that case the team contacts you to arrange another option. Cancelling more than 48 hours ahead costs nothing.

Had so much fun sand boarding! Staff were friendly & the 4WDs come & go so frequently that you can stay for as much or as little as you want. The staff are also happy to wax my board so that I could go faster.
