About Sand Dune Safaris
Sand Dune Safaris is run by one family and has worked the Worimi Conservation Lands for more than 20 years. It is accredited for bus and 4WD operations and holds a National Parks Ecopass licence, and the team keeps groups smaller on purpose so the day feels relaxed. The main outing is the Sand Boarding & Sand Surfing Safari. A 4WD shuttle heads about 10 minutes out to a boarding area far along the dunes, where instructors explain the technique before anyone rides. Riders can go down seated or upright on a basic strapped board, and experienced snowboarders can ask for the advanced boards. Slopes range from small beginner runs to a steep challenge slope, and stand-up riding stops when the sand is wet. There is no cap on time at the dunes, and most people stay one to two hours. a shady picnic spot set up with seating and tables is set up there, so groups can bring snacks and an Esky. For celebrations, the operator charters its vehicles with a driver for one group only: a seven-seat Landcruiser, the 12-seat Safari Landcruiser or a 17 or 21-seat 4WD bus. A charter can combine private sandboarding, a Tin City visit, a beach drive or pipi catch-and-release. The team names birthday parties, hens and bucks parties and corporate functions among its regular charters, and it can arrange groups of up to 100. Send an enquiry to plan a charter for your group.

Frequently asked questions
How much does sandboarding cost?
The Sand Boarding & Sand Surfing Safari is $40 for adults aged 18 and over and $35 for children aged 4 to 17, students and pensioners. A family pass for two adults and two children is $140, and children 3 and under ride free.
When can we book a private charter?
Private charters run on weekdays outside school holidays, any time from sunrise to sunset. Rates depend on season, time of day and the vehicle, so send an enquiry with your group size and preferred plan for a quote.
How big a group can you take?
The 4WD bus seats 20, and seven and 11-seat Landcruisers are also available. Larger groups are shuttled in several trips, and the team can organise groups of up to 100. Pre-booking is recommended for groups of six or more.
Can we bring food and drinks?
Yes, snacks, bottled water and an Esky are welcome, and there is a shady picnic spot set up with seating and tables. Alcohol is not allowed on the dunes, and glass bottles are not permitted because it is a national park.

After enjoying a camel ride along the beach, we enquired about sandboarding with our 3-year-old and, more importantly, whether we could get our newborn out to the dunes with a pram. We were in luck! We were able to board…

This is definitely one of the most-do activities in Port Stephens. Sandboarding was great fun although would be even more thrilling if the hills were higher (but also means more climbing). The guides were fantastic and t…
