About Ground Up Pottery
Ground Up Pottery is a small studio in West Wollongong run by a couple who are happiest with clay on their hands. Alongside weekly term classes and short wheel workshops, they host private special events that turn the studio into a relaxed, hands-on party space for a group of friends or colleagues. Nobody needs to be artistic, because the point is to slow down, get a little muddy and make something together. Group events take up to 12 people and run for about three hours of hand-building, with clay, tools and glaze all supplied. Each guest shapes their own piece and picks a glaze colour on the day, then the studio takes care of glazing and firing it. The finished pottery is collected by the organiser three to four weeks after the event. The format suits hens and bucks parties, birthdays and work team-building days, while couples can book a two-hour date night on the wheel or at the hand-building table. One-on-one lessons are also available by the hour for anyone wanting more focused tuition. Send an enquiry with your date, numbers and the kind of event you have in mind, and the studio will come back with details.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a group pottery party cost?
Large group special events are $98 a person for roughly three hours of hand-building. Date nights for two are $180 for about two hours.
How many people can come?
Group special events take up to 12 guests, which keeps the table relaxed and gives everyone room to work. Smaller groups can look at a private lesson or date night instead.
Do we need any pottery experience?
None at all. Clay, tools, equipment and glaze are provided, and the teacher has a background in education and learning development, so beginners are guided through each step.
When do we get our pieces back?
The studio glazes and fires everything after the event, and the organiser collects the finished pieces three to four weeks later.
Will we use the pottery wheel?
Large group events are hand-building sessions, shaping clay without a wheel. Private lessons and couples' date nights let you choose between hand-building and the wheel.
