About Clay Wollongong

Clay Wollongong is a community ceramics studio at 70 Keira Street in the Wollongong CBD, founded by visual artist Hannah Barclay. It runs handbuilding and wheel-throwing classes and courses for every skill level and age, gives practising artists studio access, and fires its own work and students' pieces on site. The handbuilding room is a bright space with floor-to-ceiling windows, white walls and plenty of plants. Private sessions are a large part of the studio's calendar, from work Christmas parties to birthday get-togethers, and the studio fits from 8 up to 40 people. The Wine & Clay handbuilding session runs for two hours for 10 to 40 guests, who bring their own drinks and snacks while a tutor helps each person build a vase, planter, mug or a piece of their own design; it can be as family-friendly as you like. For smaller groups, a 90-minute wheel-throwing taster takes 8 to 12 people and suits complete beginners. Kids parties run for an hour for 6 to 16 children aged 4 and over with an adult, choosing from clay creature making, a fairy kingdom workshop, free clay play or wheel sessions for ages 8 and up. Each guest makes a piece that the studio glazes and fires, ready to pick up three to four weeks later. Doors open 15 minutes before a session, so arrive a little early. The studio isn't a hospitality venue, so bring your own food, drinks and cups. Groups under the minimum size can still book by paying the minimum charge, and the handbuilding studio can also be hired on its own for functions.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private session cost?

Wine & Clay handbuilding is $85 a person for 10 to 15 guests and $80 a person for 16 to 40, with a $960 minimum charge. The wheel taster is $85 a person with a $640 minimum, and kids parties are $50 a child.

Can we bring wine and food?

Yes. Wine & Clay sessions are BYO drinks and nibbles. The studio has no facilities for washing lots of cups or plates, so bring what you need, and tutors may ask a group to leave if someone has had too much.

What ages can come to a kids party?

Kids parties suit children aged 4 and over with an accompanying adult, and wheel sessions are for ages 8 and up. Parties take 6 to 16 children, or up to 12 for wheel sessions, and adults who want to make a piece need their own ticket.

When can we collect what we made?

Each person makes one piece, which the studio glazes and fires. Pieces are usually ready three to four weeks after the session, and the pick-up page shows when they are done.

Can we reschedule a booking?

Class tickets are generally non-refundable, but you can reschedule once if you email the studio more than 48 hours before the class. Changes are only accepted by email, not by text or phone.
