About YHA Sydney Central
YHA Sydney Central is a big, social hostel in a heritage-listed building on the corner of Pitt Street and Rawson Place, right opposite Central station. It suits a hens group or a birthday crew watching the budget: the rooms are simple, but the building has a pool and terrace up on level 9, a cinema room, a guest kitchen and dining area, a street-level cafe and Schirrmo's, its own bar in the basement, which runs Wednesday to Saturday from late afternoon. Reception is staffed 24 hours and the property never closes. There are two kinds of room. Private rooms come with linen and a choice of shared bathrooms or an ensuite, in single, twin and double layouts. Co-living rooms are shared rooms of four to eight beds with lockers and bathrooms on each floor, open only to guests aged 18 and over. A small group can book online; ten or more people go through YHA's groups team, which places the group in whole rooms of its own, keeps them close together and can set aside an entire floor of up to 73 shared beds plus a few private rooms. Central station is about 100 metres away, the Haymarket light rail stop is at the front door and the coach terminal is close by, so the airport, about 8 km away, is a quick train ride. Chinatown, Spice Alley, Darling Harbour, the Capitol Theatre and the pubs and clubs of Surry Hills are all within easy reach. There is a small paid car park underneath for small and medium cars, booked at reception.

Frequently asked questions
How many people can share a room at YHA Sydney Central?
Co-living rooms hold up to eight beds, and groups are usually placed in four- to six-bed rooms with shared bathrooms on each floor. Private rooms come as singles, twins and doubles, some with an ensuite. Bigger groups can take a whole floor, which on levels 4 and 5 means 61 shared beds plus single, twin and single ensuite rooms.
Does YHA Sydney Central take hens groups?
YHA says it welcomes social groups, including friends away on girls' trips, and this property takes groups of 10 up to 150. Anyone booking for ten or more has to arrange it with the YHA groups team rather than online, and the group gets whole rooms that are not shared with other guests. Co-living rooms are for adults 18 and over only.
What are the house rules on visitors, alcohol and smoking?
Every area of the building is for staying guests only, and a key card is needed to get in at night. Because the property has its own licensed bar, YHA's rule is that you can't bring your own alcohol in. The whole building is smoke-free, vapes and e-cigarettes included, and all guests must follow YHA's house rules and code of conduct.
Is there parking, and how do we get there by public transport?
Parking is limited, undercover and paid: it is listed at $35, suits small and medium cars only and must be booked at reception. Most groups won't need a car, as Central station is about 100 metres away, the light rail stops out the front, and trains run straight from Sydney Airport to Central.
What are the check-in times, and how do group bookings and deposits work?
Rooms are ready from 2pm and you need to be out by 10am; let the property know if you're arriving late, as reception runs 24 hours. Groups send an enquiry to the groups team, then pay a deposit once the booking form is in, and some groups may also be asked for a security deposit. Everyone needs valid government photo ID at check-in.
