About Tolarno Hotel
Tolarno Hotel is an independent boutique hotel on Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, with a story that goes back to artist Mirka Mora and her husband Georges, who set it up after leaving Europe after the Second World War. Through the 1970s and 80s it was a gathering place for the suburb's artists and characters, and every room still centres on a feature artwork, with works by names such as Sidney Nolan and Howard Arkley alongside pieces by emerging artists. It suits wedding guests, birthday travellers and anyone in town for a work event who would rather stay somewhere with personality than in a standard chain room. Rooms run from the compact Piccolo and the queen-bed Balazac Room, tucked away from the street, to the larger Chambre Boheme and The Philippe, which has a private balcony over Fitzroy Street. Mirka's Studio is a 42-square-metre suite with living space and a kitchenette, and the Georges Suite, at 53 square metres, has two bedrooms, a kitchen, an open-plan lounge and dining area and sleeps four. Rooms have air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, wifi and a private bathroom. There is no lift, but staff help with bags. For events, Tolarno has art-filled conference rooms: a smaller one for up to 20 and a larger one for up to 50 that can split in two, with projectors, whiteboards, Nespresso machines and fast internet. They suit meetings, seminars and social gatherings such as birthdays. The beach, the botanical gardens and the cafes and bars of Fitzroy Street are all close, and the SkyBus stops about a block away.
