Everything to Know About Paint & Sip

In the city centre, the sip-and-create idea takes a hands-on turn at The Art Department, a pottery studio at Unit 1, 133 King Street, where guests shape clay rather than paint a canvas. The studio is a short walk from the tram on Hunter Street, with parking on Bolton Street and at Honeysuckle, which keeps it simple for a group meeting from around the harbour.

What a private clay and sip booking covers:

  • The studio to yourselves – 15 or more guests midweek, or all 20 places on a weekend
  • Two and a half hours of guided hand-building, pitched at complete beginners as much as experienced makers
  • All the clay and tools supplied
  • Your own snacks and drinks, with glassware provided
  • A glass of champagne each on request for groups of 15 or more

Firing and glazing of two small or medium pieces per guest can be added. The studio uses mid-fire clay, so finished pieces are sturdy enough for everyday use and safe in the microwave. Private events are priced by quote.

Celebrations that suit the studio

  • Hens parties wanting something creative before dinner or drinks
  • Birthdays where the guests leave with a piece they made themselves
  • Work functions looking for a relaxed, social team activity
  • Groups under 15 can email the studio to ask what's possible

Getting ready for the night

  • Wear old, comfortable clothes, because clay gets everywhere
  • Pack the snacks and drinks – the studio provides the glasses
  • Anyone who arrives intoxicated or becomes so may be asked to leave, which keeps the night fun for everyone
  • Hooked afterwards? The studio also runs wheel throwing and hand building classes and five-week courses

Is it painting or pottery?

Pottery. The Art Department's Clay and Sip sessions swap the canvas for clay, with guided hand-building and a drink in hand.

Private groups start at 15 guests. Midweek, 15 or more gets the studio to itself; on weekends a group books all 20 places for exclusive use.

How much does a private clay and sip party cost?

Can we take our pieces home?

Firing and glazing of two small or medium pieces per person can be added to the booking, giving each guest finished pottery that's sturdy and microwave safe.
